About the Sport of Hockey Cheerleading
Hockey cheerleading is a unique and fast-growing sport, both at the high school and collegiate level, that combines the athleticism of figure skating with the energy and spirit of traditional cheerleading and dance. Performed on and off the ice during hockey games, it involves synchronized skating elements, sharp cheerleading choreography, crowd engagement, and high-energy performances designed to elevate the game-day atmosphere.
Hockey cheerleading began decades ago with cheerleaders who learned how to figure skate. The sport has since revolutionized to become figure skaters who learn how to be cheerleaders. The teams are made up of individual skaters joined together on-ice in routines that combine traditional singles skating skill such as jumps and spins, along with synchronized skating skills like lifts and footwork, to create a unique sport. Hockey cheerleading teams may also perform off the ice to further interact with the crowd, demonstrating various dances and cheers.
As the State of Hockey, birthplace of cheerleading, and having a strong presence of figure skaters, we believe we are at the forefront of the sport. Within the state of Minnesota, there are approximately 6 high school programs and 5 collegiate teams. However, this number is fast growing with more interest sparking within the metro area.
